FAQs - Portraits & Caricatures
Q:
What do I need to give you when placing an order?
 A:
1. PHOTOS:
Email your photos as an attachment - or - Send photos by postal service. I can work from one or more photos or I can take people from a number of different photos and put them together in one piece. The photos will be returned to you with the final product.

Please also include details of correct eye and hair color; some fair people look dark in a photo, depending on lighting.

2. YOUR ADDRESS:
I need to have your full postal address for return delivery, and your email address so I can send you a proof before the final output. If you don’t have an email address, we can communicate via the telephone or US postal service. It just takes longer that way.

3. A COMPLETION DATE:
The date you wish the painting to be delivered, perhaps it is to be a gift for a certain date? You should try to order at least a month in advance for cards & labels, and 6 weeks for portraits and caricatures.

4. PAYMENT:
I require a 50% (non-refundable) deposit before I start your job. You can preview your artwork when finished, and I will wait for your approval before the final payment & output.

You can pay by check, money order or pay on-line using the ultra secure PayPal. There is a 3% extra charge if paying by PayPal.

Q:
Do you require that the subject sits for you in order for you to paint a portrait?
 A:
I actually prefer to work from photographs. The client provides the picture from which they’d like me to work, and ideally a few more that help me to capture the subject’s personality. You can email the photos to me or send them via snail-mail. I promise to take good care and return them.
Q:
Why a digital portrait rather than one done with oil or acrylic paints?
 A:
Traditional oil, acrylic or water color portraits are wonderful. I just prefer the versatility of working digitally. Because it is easier to make changes, and doesn’t require long drying times, it is quicker to work digitally as well. That cost is passed on to the client. In addition, the resulting image can be output to any size, on any sort of card or paper, or even posted on a web site.
Q:
What do I get when I commission a portrait?
 A:
I will supply you with one Matted Print, and you can choose the size of the output up to 11” x 17”. Because framing is such a personal thing, and would be different for each picture and each decor, I don’t provide frames in general. However, for an additional charge, I can take care of that for you as well at a local framing shop, and add the cost to the total. I usually prefer plain brushed metal frames (black, silver or gold).

Because I work in high resolution, you can have your portrait output onto big posters, note cards or post cards. You can decide at a later date to purchase additional copies. People can commissioned one portrait of their child, then purchase several copies for grandparents and other relatives.

I am happy to email a low resolution copy of the final product to anyone you wish.
Q:
What if the print fades or something happens to my portrait?
A:
I offer a lifetime guarantee. Obviously, a printed output will not have the staying power of an oil or acryllic painting, so I am happy to ouput a replacement print if yours should fade or somehow get destroyed. I offer this service free of charge. Customer pays shipping.
 Q:
Are the portraits really painted, or are they just photographs that have been altered with some special filter or program on computer?
A:
I usually look at photos when doing a portrait or caricature, but they are created totally by hand... on my computer. Many of you have used drawing programs before. I use a very cool software program that allows me to paint and draw on my computer. Each stroke of my pen is like the stroke of a brush. I also sometimes like to incorporate real world items into my caricatures. It gives the picture more of a whimsical, mixed-media look.
